Session #1 - From Voluntary to Mandatory: How EU Regulations Will Shape the Future of EPDs and LCA
The European regulatory landscape for construction and building sustainability is rapidly evolving – and with it, the expectations for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data. This high-level panel session will provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of what’s coming on the EU policy front, and what it means for digital environmental data in the construction sector.
Representatives from key European Commission Directorates (DG ENER, DG ENV, and DG GROW) will share the latest insights on how upcoming regulations will affect both product and building-level environmental data requirements:
- Bunthan IEA (DG ENER) will outline how the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) will make LCA and Global Warming Potential (GWP) assessments mandatory for new buildings via national building codes.
- Estelle ELIZAGOÏEN (DG ENV) will highlight how the LEVEL(s) framework sets the direction for environmental product data requirements and harmonization.
- Oscar Nieto Sanz (DG GROW) will present the upcoming Construction Products Regulation (CPR), focusing on how and when manufacturers will need to comply with new digital environmental data obligations.
- Dieter De Lathauwer (DG ENV / CEN TC 350) will explain the standardization process underpinning these regulatory developments and how harmonized standards will support implementation.
🎤 Moderated by Olympia Dolla (Vice President of ECO Platform and Head of Sustainability EMEIA at ASSA ABLOY), the session will reflect the practical perspective of manufacturers navigating this evolving regulatory environment.
To complete the picture, two leading voices from the user side will share what’s needed for credible, affordable, and functional data exchange at the building level:
- Harpa Birgisdóttir (Professor, Aalborg University) and
- Johannes Kreissig (Managing Director, DGNB – German Sustainable Building Council)
will describe data requirements from the perspective of building assessments and certification, highlighting how regulatory and voluntary data need to come together.
